Bert Woodruff was the son of non-professionals Hannah R. and William A. Woodruff of Peoria, Illinois. He was married to Hattie M. Sprague. He entered the theatrical profession in 1876 in Minstrels and toured for two years as a Minstrel. He also managed theatres in Davenport, Iowa; Sheboygan, Wisconsin and in Chicago and Springfield, Illinois until 1904. He went to California that year with a Carnival company. He entered pictures in 1916 with D. W. Griffith, appearing in "Jim Bludson," "Veteran Sinners," "Children of Dust," "Flaming Gold," "The Barrier," "The Fire Brigade," "Spring Fever," "Speedy," "Masked Money" and "The Awakening."
